Before we begin, there was one thing that really stood out to me about this episode. That being, the, horrible, never ending, grotesque, faces, being pulled, all, the, damn, time. I don’t have any clue why this episode has such an obsession with exaggerated expressions but watching this episode makes me feel like I am watching an insane asylum.

But that’s only skin deep.. let us look at.. the “story”.

The main thing going on in this episode is the arrival of the yak prince and his response to the ponies (mishandled) hospitality. That isn’t a bad premise to start with but it feels like they didn’t really add enough to it.

To me, the main ‘issue’ of this story was as clear as day and it was exasperating to sit through the many failed attempts and pathetic attempts of the leads to try and figure out what to do.*

The main personal arc (with PP) feels almost tacked on to this story. The majority of her depicted journey is physical (rather than mental) and it feels like she ‘discovers’ the obvious in a very egocentric and preachy manner.

I am a little lost as to how to slice this episode beyond this...

If say this were supposed to be Pinkie Pie’s story...

Then we didn’t spend that much time with her... because a lot of time was given to following the rest of the M6.

What she was ‘doing’ was mostly just traveling... and her journey is just... full of stupid. Just look at the cannon map of Equestria. She has limited time and wants to go north, so she goes south (she’s a moron) to Dodge Junction. Ironically Dodge Junction isn’t even a junction according to the map, it’s a dead end and it’s about as far as Appleloosa which took day & night to reach in the past. But.. erm... now there’s sheep in the way (of the front of the train.. that just arrived.. meaning they are blocking the way to the dead end). Luckily though Cherry Jubilee was just about to set out to TCE by carriage (that would take forever!), so she hitches a lift with the swiftly asleep crew (they are also morons). Luckily (again) they were saved by the Wonderflops and they took her to Manehatten... oh why am I explaining this? This sequence is bananas. I don’t give a toss about any of the stages of this journey and in the end she just slides all the way back on a skid, making it ALL completely pointless! Basically this whole journey was just padding and it’s all so contrived and hammy that it becomes tiresome.

Ugh.. this episode it is all just such a clusterfuck. I thought that things couldn’t get much worse from last episode, but I was wrong. Last time they at least only focused on Spike and told a simple tale with a dumb twist at the end. This time.. they chucked everyone into a mind numbing tedium until the inevitable (and expected) conclusion. Everything feels so empty... except for those insane faces leering at me from the back of my mind... who could be that stupid to accept this as a central plot point? Pinkie was part of a band... for some reason... suddenly Cadence, a creature and a little yak... it all doesn’t make sense, there’s no rhyme or reason... it’s all an insane ramble!

So yeah.. I think I’m done trying to think about this episode. In conclusion I would dub this episode ‘stupidity’ the episode, because everything feels fractally stupid. The plot is stupid, the goings on were stupid, the yaks were stupid and the writers thought we were stupid...

*This might though be an issue of cultural relativism type stuff... I’ve grown up in multicultural Britain (which is also near many other countries/cultures). It is a natural instinct to me; that you shouldn’t serve someone from Japan; rice (they are pretty used to rice and they probably have much better sources and cooks for it at home).
I would guess however this might be vastly different to the intended audience, kids from the vast (though generally (more) culturally homogenous) United States.
Still, I would like to imagine that the main conflict of this episode should become pretty apparent pretty quickly to almost everyone, particularly given how hard they try to hammer it home... even if the yaks are ludicrously intolerant...

I enjoyed the episode mostly. That the journey didn't reach it's destination didn't bother me since that was kind of the point. Pinkie learned everything she needed on the journey alone. I found it very amusing and Pinkie pie was well in character.
I think the party cave is a new thing and Pinkie Pie didn't have it during season 1. Though maybe they could have taken more time to develop that. Like having more of an episode dedicated to it. Nevertheless it was a nice touch. That Pinkie super memory never appealed to me, it just made her seem less realistic.
The yaks were simple but amusing. Also these are a ruler and 2 accomplices, they don't necessarily speak for the whole population. It could have been done better maybe but it was good enough.

The one thing that I didn't like though was how much of a pushover the ponies were. I would expect them to also get angry at the yaks for destroying their stuff and being so ungrateful. Also this was the very first real royal duty that Twilight does without guidance and it would have been nice if they had touched upon that. Maybe that the mane 5 are all getting angry and Twilight must keep them calm to not upset the yaks. Then they start redirecting their frustrations towards Twilight and she keeps insisting that they have to be patient with them. Twilight of course would also be ready to blast them but as a princess she needs to stay civil. It would have been a really good display of the obligations of being a princess; having to deal with insufferable creatures and not being allowed to stand up for yourself. I think they tried to do that but I didn't see that and it was a real shame.

I liked the story overall. Though it wasn't as good as I had hoped it was still fun.
